Ready? Here’s how to make that day at home a real adventure for both of you!
Have an Indoor Snowball Fight
This easy activity brings an outdoor tradition inside, where your child won’t get wet and chilly.
Gather your materials. You will need white or sky-blue paper (or newspaper), clear tape and a table to make the “snowballs.”
Clear a large space and make it safe. If you’re using the living room, for example, move furniture out of the way.
Create forts. Use pillows or a rolled blanket to make each fort area.
Make the snowballs. Crumple a piece of paper tightly. Tape it together so it stays in a ball shape.
It’s on! Toss the “snowballs” at one another. Crouch behind your fault and let fly! Give a point each time one of you gets a “hit.” The winner gets to choose two cozy movies to binge-watch together.
Hold a Baking Contest
This is another winter warmup that you and your kids will love. Gather a few simple ingredients, plus a bunch of just-for-fun ones. (Try M&Ms, sour gummy candies, sprinkles, cereal pieces or chopped nuts.)
Don’t peek –– you want her imagination to go as wild (and delicious!) as she wants it to. Award points for the most creative cookie or cupcake. Each point earns one bite of the treat she loves most.
Have a Doll’s Skiing Party
Dolls for girls and boys are the key to this fun activity. All your child needs is a doll or two, some accessories and his own imagination –– the sky’s the limit.
This game can work even better if you have a few accessories. If you don’t, it’s easy to improvise. Grab or draw and cut out these:
Doll ski and snowboard toys
Cozy doll jackets
White and blue construction paper (to make a ski trail or skating rink)
Doll cups and plates for pretend “cocoa”
Anything else your little one wants for her ski party –– even if that’s a pet dinosaur, an alien spaceship or a few toy pets
Create Wintry Window Art
Using soft materials to reduce the possibility of scratching, show your child how to gently make little pictures on your frosty windows. Here’s how: gently place the item against the snowy window for five seconds, then pull off. There will be a melted area in the fanciful shape.
Pencil erasers, small doll toys, your child’s fingers and even her breath are all great ways to make pretty pictures on the panes.
Brave the Cold...and Love Every Minute
You don’t have to be stuck inside all day on a snow day. Bundle yourself and your little one up and explore some winter fun.
Make snow angels with your arms and legs. Have your child make crazy footprints in all directions; your job is to step in each one and not fall. Build miniature snow people. Make a sled out of the top of a garbage can and slide all over the yard. Encourage your child to make up her own games and follow along.
Sometimes, a fun winter gift can really make a snow day...and it can become a keepsake, too. We’re so proud and pleased to introduce our newest little adventurer, Snow Day Lottie!
Snow Day Lottie comes with her own adventure story to get your child’s creative juices going. Here’s the scoop: this brave youngster has just returned from the Antarctic. Her mission, Expedition Homeward Bound, has taught her the impact women can have in shaping the future of their own home –– Planet Earth.
Like other keepsake Lottie dolls, Snow Day Lottie has an open “let’s be friends” look, is proportioned realistically and comes with her own outfit and hair your child can play with. Because she looks like a real child, this future keepsake lets kids put themselves into the story...and go on to create plenty of adventures of their own.
The Takehome: Keep Up the Fun...All Year Long
It doesn’t have to be snowing to enjoy winter-geared dolls, pets and toys. Pretending it’s chilly when your child is in short sleeves is a great way for your child to get away to a whole new environment, created exclusively by him.
Believe it or not, in a few more months you’ll be longing for those snow days. Help your child make memories now, and she’ll grow and expand in amazing new ways that she creates.
